Youth Retreat Report

This year's Youth Retreat, held July 11 - 17th was a lot of fun!  Hope Church became "Hope's Paradise Island" for the week where youth and their helpers stayed in huts and cabanas (formerly known as Sunday School rooms!)  The Choir Room was the Island Cafe where meals were shared and the Aloha Canteen was in Hambley Hall.  Some also enjoyed chilly "Hope Waterfalls", which was a man-made shower located outside behind the kitchen (thank you Wayne Kosfeld)!
The theme for the week was "Get an attitude - The Beatitudes" where we examined each of the Beatitudes and thought about how they apply to each of us individually and how we can develop a more Christ-like attitude.  The week was kicked off with a luau Sunday evening where delicious food was consumed and special entertainment was enjoyed (thanks to Dave Thompson (our fire dancer) and Mark Abdo, Keith Fisher and Rob Stevens (our hula/tahitian dancers!)  The service projects included sealing the outside deck at the Pregnancy Center in Pinellas Park; cleaning and painting 3 benches and 3 planters for the Pregnancy Center in Clearwater; painting the Senior High Room @ Hope; and a variety of tasks at Pinellas Hope in St. Petersburg.  We also enjoyed a stop at Myakka River State Park in Sarasota  where we experienced the "Canopy Walkway and Tower" (one of 20 in the world featuring a 25' canopy walkway and 74' tower for an awesome view of wetlands, forest, and prairie).  We continued our  adventure in Ft. Myers where we attended a dinner theatre seeing the show "Footloose" and spent a day at "The Shell Factory" where we enjoyed a nature center filled with plants and animals, panned for gems or fossils (in the rain!), played miniature golf, spent time in the arcade, shopped,  and had water balloon wars!
Throughout the week we had cookouts and swim parties (thank you Randy and Christy Spencer); took part in local activities such as Teen Tidal Wave Tuesday and Friday night Flick 'N Float hosted by the City of Largo.  Youth were able to compete in "Minute to Win It" competitions to earn the highly coveted "Tropical Trophy"!  We also created art work for the Senior High Room (thank you Dell Kosfeld for lending your expertise!)  Each night special treats were found on pillows (thank you Pat Turner, Barb Kuhlman, Martha Huntley and Marlene Abdo)  The week was very full and enriching, our young people truly enjoy being with one another and serving others and they are learning and growing in their faith.  Those who attended the retreat were:  Veronica Abdo, Adam Blais, Joshua Blais (Sunday evening), Ian Fisher, Kaitlynn Fisher and Kimberly Stevens.  Many thanks to our adult helpers:  Midge Weatherwax, Donna Weatherwax, Dave Thompson, Melissa Lundvall, Wayne Kosfeld, Sara Spencer, and Marlene Abdo.  Special thanks to additional help with our luau dinner:  Barb Kuhlman, Sharon Fisher (also for laundry!!) and Jenny Blais.
Many thanks to the congregation for financial support and prayers and any inconveniences experienced as the rooms were converted into "Hope's Paradise Island"!!  Keep our youth in your prayers as they continue to seek ways to serve Him and love others as they continue to grow in their faith.
